The opportunity to be alive at this time. Thank you Jesus. O Lord the vehicle you have chosen to do the work with widows, known as the Walk With Widows Initiative, we pray you build it into a global phenomenon to champion and secure #JusticeforWidows all over the world in the name of Jesus Christ Our Lord and Saviour. Prayer June 27 by Mrs. Tayo Agunbiade Isaiah 1:17 - Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow. Today's focal point will be on legal reforms that can put an end to widow abuse in Nigeria. Several laws have been enacted at federal and state levels, but the challenge is the low rate of implementation. The 2015 Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) VAPP Act for example, includes various forms of harmful practices against widows. Only a few states have domesticated this legislation in the states. Advocacy to see this happen continues by various women's groups. Two states Enugu and Anambra passed legislation in 2001 & 2005 respectively prohibiting dehumanising treatment towards widows. These laws however are not being enforced to protect widows. In recent years, pressure had been applied in Benue, Bauchi and Niger States to implement VAPP reforms. Some practices are steeped in so - called tradition, others are just in-laws in connivance with officials acting arbitrarily and maltreating widows. This must stop. We can put an end to this societal problem through our prayers and actions. No woman should have to go through any form of oppression because she has been widowed. The Holy Word of God calls us not to engage in behaviour that will cause further grief for widows thereby adding an extra layer of burden on them. ...
